The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a 501(c)(4) organization, is the country鈥檚 oldest and largest civil and human rights coalition of more than 200 national organizations. The Leadership Conference has coordinated national advocacy efforts on behalf of every major civil rights law since 1957. The Leadership Conference Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization, works to build public will for federal policies that promote and protect civil and human rights in the United States. Founded in 1969 as the education and research arm of The Leadership Conference, The Education Fund鈥檚 campaigns inform, educate and empower local, state and national leaders to advance and protect civil and human rights and progressive change in the United States.


The Program Director will lead team efforts to develop a transformational advocacy program that protects and advances civil and human rights in furtherance of the mission and policies of The Leadership Conference. The director will be responsible for leading the overall strategic vision of her/his program which includes government affairs, field, and communications and for overseeing the implementation of the workplans to achieve program goals and objectives. The director will work with diverse audiences and serve as the linchpin to ensure that the internal program team as well as constituency groups and coalition partners are working in coordination to further programmatic goals and objectives. This is a term limited position that is scheduled to end December 2020.

This position reports to the Executive Vice President of Campaigns and Programs and the Senior Vice President of Campaigns and Programs.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Creates a comprehensive organizational workplan in consultation with the government affairs, communications, and field departments to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Monitors, manages, and leads internal team for fighting hate and bias issues (with a focus on immigration) to ensure timely and effective implementation of workplan across departments.
  • Manages program budget and directs resources to meet program goals and objectives.
  • Measures and evaluates team effectiveness and performance in meeting goals.
  • Provides concept creation, budgeting, and reporting support to development team for fundraising purposes.
  • Ensures compliance with all funding requirements and other administrative, fiscal, and legal responsibilities.
  • Ensures that the campaign鈥檚 goals and objectives are met in the implementation of the programs.
  • Provides strategic support and directs resources to program initiatives at the state and local level consistent with the team鈥檚 workplan.
  • Ensures that the program is being managed effectively and provides written status reports as requested.

Policy Development

  • Helps formulate a proactive policy agenda to advance program goals and objectives.
  • Provides strategic direction and guidance on key policy questions regarding both federal law and select state legislation.
  • Drafts, reviews, edits, and approves documents and materials related to program before dissemination, including reports, policy statements, opinion pieces, issue briefs, letters, fact sheets, and talking points to educate policymakers and the general public on organizational and coalition priority issues.

Skills and Qualifications

The job requires:

  • Advocacy expertise in advancing reforms and demonstrated knowledge of the field;
  • An innovative thinker with a proven track record in developing strategic programming and/or campaigns for progressive, civil rights, social justice or related organization(s)
  • Demonstrated coalition experience
  • Excellent oral presentation and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal, planning, coordinating, and managerial skills, including the ability to develop talent and foster a positive and creative work environment
